In 2013, Boyan Slat began to question the large volumes of plastic accumulating in our oceans and why no one was doing anything to clean it up. At 16 years old, he began research into potential solutions to effectively recover and remove it

Wishing you all well over the festive season may 2014 be a year where better business helps create a better world

The holidays are a time for spending; spending time with the ones we love, spending energy on creativity and spending time reflecting on all we have – not all we want.

As the festive season gets under way we are bombarded with messages of conspicuous consumption even more than usual. The holidays become a time to spend, spend, spend on everything from food to gifts to decorations and it has got us at GCX Africa thinking about what the festive season is all about. Is it necessary to spend huge amounts of money on, often, unwanted gifts, huge amounts of food that can’t possibly all be eaten and other luxuries? Of course, we all want to spend time with and spoil the ones we love, but there must be a better, more sustainable way to do it. With that in mind we have come up with some better Christmas ideas for gifts that do good for the environment and society and ideas to help you decorate for the festive season.

In this newsletter we also focus on GCX Africa’s leading role in helping South Africa’s top companies with their CDP reporting, an opportunity to attend Al Gores Climate Leaders training, a debate on future proofing Africa and other better business news from around the globe.

Wishing you all well over the festive season and may 2014 be a year where better business helps create a better world for all.

The GCX Africa Team.
